A humorous, heartfelt Lithuanian film about pigs, economics and love screening in London

On 17 September, the EBRD (European Bank of Reconstruction and Development) and the Lithuanian Embassy in the UK invite you to a screening of Egle Vertelyte‘s award-winning debut film Miracle, followed by a discussion and Q&A with her.

The year is 1992 and Lithuania has shifted from communism to capitalism, leaving the small collective pig farm managed by Irena in dire straits. Irena struggles to keep the farm and her workers afloat when a seemingly wealthy American, Bernardas, arrives pledging to save the struggling enterprise, turning Irena‘s family life and the village routine upside-down. As Irena begins to fall for his charms, she realizes that his intentions may not be entirely innocent.

Miracle was launched at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017, and travelled to more than 30 film festivals, returning to Lithuania in 2018 where it won four awards.

Time: 6pm
Place: EBRD Headquarters, One Exchange Square, London EC2A 2JN

The evening is organised by the EBRD and the Lithuanian Film Centre, the Lithuanian Embassy in the UK and the Lithuanian Culture Attaché in the UK. The event is one of a series marking the centenary of restored Lithuanian statehood. The film is in Lithuanian with English subtitles and is 91 minutes long.

Join drinks reception on 17 September 2018 from 17.30 in advance of the film, which will begin promptly at 18.00 in the auditorium. The film’s director, Eglė Vertelytė will attend and participate in a Q&A session with the audience following the film.
