An award-winning documentary, filmed over ten years by Lithuanian biologist Mindaugas Survila, is coming to London.

Shot in one of the last remaining patches of old growth forest in Lithuania the film takes its viewers on a journey from the forest thickets to the wolves’ caves and up to black stork’s nest, and then deep into the water to the underwater forest, returning after to the human beings inhabiting the edge of the woodland. There’s no commentary, only the rich, almost palpable sounds of the forest and the magical situations captured by the camera.

"The Ancient Woods" is a place where the boundaries of time melt and everything that exists does not wither or age but “grows into” eternity. 

The film gently erases the line separating the human and natural lives, interweaving them into a single poetic story. Its style and narrative brings it close to a fantasy tale. The “Ancient Woods” was shot using original climbing and diving equipment, which enriched the cinematic language with a variety of camera angles and shots.

Mindaugas Survila, the director and cinematographer of "The Ancient Woods" had a dream to create this movie since he was in a fifth grade. A long journey was waiting for him towards this dream. Initially he took pictures of nature. While in school, Mindaugas participated in various Young Scientists Conferences in Lithuania and once - in Bergen, where he introduced his scientific observations of nature by a number of photos.

Later, Mindaugas joined Vilnius University, where he was granted a Bachelor’s degree in biology.

Seeking to get more knowledge about filmmaking Mindaugas worked as a cameraman assistant, still photographer, second cameraman, extras casting in various films of famous Lithuanian and international filmmakers. At the same time he began making his film, the docu-poem called "The Field of Magic" ("Stebuklų laukas"). For him this film was the cinematographic school because he was able to acquire the experience from the team of some of the best cinema professionals in Lithuania working with him..).

The latter movie attracted not only a huge number of audiences to the Lithuanian cinema theatres, but also began to travel around the prestigious documentary film festivals.

Mindaugas has been purposefully preparing for making “The Ancient Woods” for 18 years. He felt that it was going to be particularly difficult to create. However, Mindaugas Survila believed that with his experience and the help of a reliable team anything is possible. He hoped that “The Ancient Woods” would not only attract a large number of people to the cinema theatres, but would also stimulate discussions on the theme of real values in life.

Film premier in London is presented in conjunction with the celebrations of the centenary of restored statehood of Lithuania, by Embassy of Lithuania in the United Kingdom together with Baltic View.

„Sengirė“ yra vieta, kurioje ne tik ištirpsta laiko ribos, bet ir viskas, kas egzistuoja, stiebiasi į amžinybę. Šis filmas nufilmuotas paskutiniuose išlikusiuose senosios girios plotuose Lietuvoje. Poetiškas, netipiškas filmas apie gamtą kviečia žiūrovus į begalinę kelionę. Pradedant nuo miško brūzgynų iki vilkų urvų, kylant aukštyn į juodųjų gandrų lizdus ir neriant gilyn į povandeninius miškus, ir sugrįžtant į pakraštį miško, kur gyvena žmogus. Čia nėra jokio užkadrinio balso, tik beveik apčiuopiami, stiprūs girios ir jos gyventojų garsai bei kamera užfiksuotos magiškos akimirkos.

Dar mokydamasis penktoje klasėje filmo "Sengirė" operatorius ir režisierius Mindaugas Survila svajojo sukurti šį filmą. Jo laukė ilgas kelias. Iš pradžių Mindaugas fotografavo gamtą. Mokydamasis mokykloje dalyvaudavo Lietuvos ir Europos Sąjungos jaunųjų mokslininkų konferencijose, kur pristatė savo mokslinius gamtos stebėjimus, gausiai iliustruotus nuotraukomis.

Vėliau Mindaugas Vilniaus universitete apsigynė biologijos bakalauro diplomą. Baigdamas ekologijos ir aplinkotvarkos magistro studijas baigė kurti pirmąjį savo filmą “Susitikimas su Žuvininkais“, kuris buvo apdovanotas Petro Abukevičiaus premija kaip geriausias lietuviškas filmas apie gamtą.

Iškart po to Mindaugas Survila pradėjo kurti "Stebuklų lauką". Šis filmas jam buvo ir kinematografinė mokykla, nes patirties sėmėsi iš vienų geriausių kino specialistų Lietuvoje (montažo režisieriaus, garso režisieriaus, operatoriaus, koloristo ir t. t). Taip pat daug neįkainojamų žinių Mindaugas gavo ir iš užsienyje dirbančių žymių kino kūrėjų.

Pastarasis Mindaugo Survilos filmas sulaukė ne tik didžiulio skaičiaus žiūrovų Lietuvos kino teatruose, bet taip pat keliavo po prestižinius dokumentinio kino festivalius.

Mindaugas 18 metų kryptingai ruošėsi savo naujam filmui "Sengirė". "Jaučiau, kad jį sukurti bus ypatingai sunku, bet didelės patirties ir patikimos komandos dėka viskas įmanoma. Tikiuosi, kad filmą „Sengirė“ ne tik pamatys daugybė žmonių, bet jis taip pat paskatins diskusijas vertybių tema," - tokia buvo Mindaugo svajonė.
